Where Granola wins
- The note-merging idea is genuinely better than a raw transcript: you jot fragments during the call, and Granola turns them into coherent notes shaped by what you thought mattered.
- There's a real free tier. Life Manager Pro has only a 14-day trial.
- Windows support, and collaboration features — shared folders, org-wide admin controls — that a single-user Mac app doesn't attempt.
- Granola's privacy policy is unusually specific and honest about its subprocessors, which is more than most of this category manages.
- Meeting summaries are included in the price; Life Manager Pro asks you to bring your own API key for that step.

Should you actually switch?
Isn't Granola already private? It doesn't use a bot.
Bot-free and on-device are different things. Granola captures audio locally instead of joining your call as a participant, then streams that audio to third-party transcription services (Deepgram, AssemblyAI) and stores transcripts in its cloud. It deletes the recording afterward and doesn't let those providers train on your data — genuinely better than most. But the audio does leave your Mac. With Life Manager Pro it doesn't.
Does Life Manager Pro merge my notes like Granola does?
No. That's Granola's signature feature and it does it better. Life Manager Pro records, transcribes locally, and extracts action items — but it doesn't blend your live notes into the transcript the way Granola does.
Which is more accurate?
Cloud transcription services still hold a small edge on hard audio — heavy accents, crosstalk, poor microphones. Local Whisper on Apple Silicon is close enough that most people don't notice on normal meeting audio, but we're not going to claim it wins.
Can I use both?
Yes, though they'll both try to capture the same meeting. If you're evaluating, run them on separate calls rather than the same one.
